Staying on the topic of difficulty, there are some puzzles that are significantly more challenging than others. I like the idea that I can replay this game in a totally different way. As long as you understand Limit Breaks, which is the unique attacking ability your characters gain at low health, then you don’t ever need to summon a GF in battle. In fact, doing so will lower compatibility with other GFs as this was the games way of balancing things out. You can raise compatibility with your favourite GFs, but it’s not necessary. You can choose to level up your main character, or not. There is a lot more flexibility in how you choose to play the game, and since items take a backseat to magic, you don’t need much money to buy items. This is one of the strengths of Final Fantasy 8. However, the difficulty of achieving a high seed rank is mitigated entirely by the fact that the ranking system is completely optional. I don’t normally advocate guides, but there are 30 tests in total containing 10 questions each, and each test requires 100% score in order to pass.

Why is this difficult? Because the fastest way to raise your rank is to take a series of tests in the tutorial section, and if you don’t kill enough enemies in the allotted time or fail certain missions, your seed rank will drop. The higher your rank, the more money you earn. You will be paid in timed intervals according to your ranking. First, you start off by joining the military as a soldier, known as seeds, and with that position comes a ranking system. Now, I would like to address the more challenging aspects of this game. The game’s difficulty lies in your ability to properly manage GFs. Draw magic from enemies, and use that magic to increase your stats. By junctioning 100 magic to your stats, you can make your party so overpowered that you will never die again. If a GF has the ability to learn a stat or skill that your character is missing, you should junction that GF to the appropriate character to maximize his or her stats. In doing so, the GF will learn abilities that can be junctioned to your character. The player must unlock Guardian Forces (known as GFs) and level them up. For new players, allow me to state emphatically that Final Fantasy 8 is not a difficult game, so if you felt overwhelmed or intimidated by the beginning tutorials, just understand that combat is not as complex as the lengthy explanations would suggest. In this review, I will attempt to explain the nuances of 90’s gaming through the lens of my personal experience with Final Fantasy 8.
